Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ's
How do I know which windows and doors to buy so my home can be windstorm certified?
Every home is different.  Location on the beach, size and number of windows and doors, and their locations on the
house all play a factor in which products are approved for your home.  Please don't assume that you can just buy the
same windows as your neighbor, as this may not be the case, and replacing the materials will cost you in both time and
money.  Contact our office for a consultation and we can discuss these items in detail before your purchases are made
and determine which the appropriate choices for your particular application are.

I own an older home and it is under the "grandfather" clause.  Can I make any changes that I want?
The "grandfather" clause permits existing structures to be covered without being brought up to meet a more restrictive
windstorm code. This is commonly done to prevent the owners of older structures from spending large sums to
improve their property every time the code is amended.

However, any changes or alterations to the previously existing structure do not fall under the provisions of the
"grandfather" clause, and must be in compliance with the current windstorm code. This includes even minor changes,
such as replacement of an old door or window. Any changes would have to be certified by an engineer in order to
maintain your insurance coverage. Failure to do so may void any future claim.

How much do you charge for ________?
Aran and Franklin Engineering quotes prices by the job, based on the size and complexity of the structure.  For a quote,
please send a fax to (409) 935-5209, or e-mail us with a detailed description of your project. We will respond as quickly
as possible.

I have minor damages/repairs to my house.  Will I need Windstorm Inspections?
If your repairs are to the interior of the home only, you will not need inspections.

If you have minor repairs to the exterior, they may not need inspections if they fall under the
excluded items.
In these cases, you would send a letter to your insurance agent identifying the exclusion, products used, and
verifying the repairs were made.  Include photographs and receipts to document.  This is in place of a WPI-8.

I have a historic structure.  Do I need Windstorm Inspections?
Repairs, alterations and additions necessary for the preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or continued use of a
historic structure will not require Windstorm inspection and need not comply with the building specifications provided
that at least on of the following conditions apply:
-The structure is listed or is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Locations.
-The structure is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
-The structure has been specifically designated by official action of a legally constituted municipal or county authority as
having special historical or architectural significance, is at least 50 years old, and is subject to the municipal or county
requirements relative to construction, alteration, or repair of the structure in order to maintain its historical designation.

Note:  It is recommended that construction to historical structures comply with the building specification whenever
possible without violating any of the requirements necessary to maintain its historical designation.
